Marine Fire Investigation

Marine Fire Investigation is a three and a half day class on investigating fires on marine vessels. Developed through a collaboration between the IAAI and the American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC), students receive training from IAAI facilitators, industry leading marine fire investigators, marine surveyors, engineers and special investigators. Topics will include the following areas: safety, hot surface ignition, marine explosions, electrical systems, vessel terminology, interviews, data collection, scientific method, methodology, legal considerations and evidence. Utilizing the team concept, classes conclude with a hands-on investigation of a pre-burnt vessel, generation of a preliminary report, and presentation of each team’s findings to the class.

Upon completion of this class, students will understand marine vessel terminology, concepts of how marine electrical and propulsion systems are configured and operate, and safe and practical methods of investigating marine fires.
Hosts for this class must provide a training facility conducive to the size of the class expected, and audio visual equipment that supports class size and a PowerPoint presentation. Additionally, they must provide an area suitable for burning vessels to be used in the instruction. They must procure, site, and dispose of enough vessels to support the class, as well as coordinate suppression for the actual burns. IAAI Training will discuss these issues with you when scheduling the class.
